Why Are Drug Rehab Centers Treating So Many People For Prescription Drug Addiction? By Gloria MacTaggart
A research company recently conducted an experiment to find out how easy it is to get prescription drugs on the Internet. The researchers supervised a thirteen-year-old girl ordering Ritalin online: She filled out all the required information honestly, including her true age, her order was processed and she received her Ritalin. Legal cocaine. If she’d put a rush on it, it would have been delivered the next day - just in time for the weekend party with her friends, many of whom should probably be in drug rehab, not at a party taking more drugs.
Although the Internet isn’t the only source of prescription drugs, this certainly gives you an idea of why prescription drug addiction is spreading like wildfire, and why the need for drug and drug rehab to get people off these drugs is vital.
Internet prescription drug sites may be convenient for those of us who have prescriptions, but 89% of these pharmacies have no prescription requirements whatsoever - 30% boldly state that no prescription is required, 60% offer a ‘consultation’ which, in reality, is nothing more than an online questionnaire, and 10% make no mention of a prescription at all.
Of the 11% of sites that do require a prescription, 90% allow it to be faxed in, which essentially opens the door to forgery as well as multiple submissions to different pharmacies using the same prescription - legally obtained or not.
Since 1992 prescription drug abuse has increased by 94%. At the end of 2004 there were more individuals reporting prescription drug abuse than the number of individuals abusing cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin combined. Some drug rehab and drug centers are filled with people who have developed prescription drug addiction and dependency and accidental overdose deaths are also reported regularly in the news: adults, children as young as 14 years old, and seniors are dying all around us and most of those deaths could have been prevented if someone had known
about the drugs and gotten the people into drug and drug rehab.
Of particular concern is that one in five teens have reported abusing prescription drugs, with over 80% having used an opioid such as OxyContin or Vicodin - they’re basically the same as heroin.
Studies have shown that over half of these kids believe that getting high from prescription drugs is much safer than street drugs, and three out of ten see nothing wrong with abusing prescription drugs once in a while.
These kids also believe that prescription drugs aren’t addictive. It’s a grave misconception, and is one of the reasons more and more people are showing up with prescription drug addiction and dependency problems in drug and drug rehab centers.
Online pharmacies are doing everything they can to cash in on this misconception - with no regard for the lives they are endangering and no compensation for those who wind up in drug rehab because of the pharmacy’s irresponsible behavior.
Obviously, some serious regulations need to be placed on Internet pharmacies. There are many agencies working to combat the problem, but the situation is far from remedied.
It is vital that you educate your children – and other members of your family who have the same misconception and could therefore easily develop prescription drug addiction and dependency quite by accident – on the dangers of prescription drugs. And if they already have a problem, get them into a drug and drug rehab program as fast as possible. Don’t let your family members and friends become one of the news stories.
