Imagine... You Can Learn To Enhance Your Health Even If You Do Have Diabetes!
By Patricia Wagner
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, Better health is an objective that's worth pursuing. Diabetics can improve their health in a lot of ways through proper nutrition.

Are you aware that studies have shown extra weight means the more likely you are to suffer with diabetes? Losing weight can bring wonderful new health to diabetics!

If you want to enhance your health, create a special meal plan on a regular basis that's appropriate for diabetics.

You can still enjoy eating even with this illness! Being vigilant about what you eat doesn't mean you'll have boring and unsatisfying meals.

As a diabetic there are some foods you need to avoid. Here's a list of foods that are bad for you:

1. Fatty foods should be avoided.

For example, limit your fat intake by cooking with less fat. Don't use cooking oils such as coconut oil or palm oil or shortening. Instead of cooking with oils that are harmful to your health, use cooking oils such as olive oil and flax seed oil.

There are fats that are harmful and other fats that can actually be good for you. The bad fats are called saturated fats and they can hurt your health. Bad fats are harmful in several ways. Since they can cause your cholesterol level to rise to dangerous levels, heart trouble can result. Avoid eating poultry skins, butter, margarine and whole milk dairy products.

Pre-packaged foods are usually high in bad fats, so for that reason you'll want to avoid buying them.

Rather than using whole milk, purchase skim milk. That's one way to cut back on bad fats. Here's an easy way to reduce your daily fat intake: cut fat off meat before cooking it.

2. You'll also want to avoid eating high cholesterol foods.

To protect your health, remember that animal products, such as eggs and dairy products, are some of the main sources of cholesterol. Since foods from plants don't contain cholesterol, eat vegetables and fruit, grains, cereals, nuts and seeds as the main source of your diet.

3. Severely limit sugary foods and drinks.

Since cookies, cakes, pies, ice cream and soft drinks are high in sugar, just say "no" to them on a consistent basis.

4. Use as little salt as possible since too much is not good for diabetics.

Processed meats, such as lunch meats, and prepackaged convenience foods are usually loaded with salt. So keep that in mind when you shop.

5. Diabetics should avoid eating large amounts of simple carbohydrates.

Some simple carbohydrates that should be on your banned list of foods include fruit sugar, table sugar and milk sugar. The foods just mentioned should either be completely avoided or eaten sparingly.

Now here's a list of foods that you should eat to be as healthy as possible:

1. Vegetables and select fruits plus whole grains should be featured foods in your daily diet.

2. Be sure to include enough protein in your diet such as skinless poultry, fish, nuts and cheese.

3. Bread, pasta and rice are complex carbohydrates. Be sure to eat complex carbohydrates every day.

To help keep your weight in check, invest in a food scale to weigh your food so you don't overeat. Another helpful suggestion is to be sure you don't skip meals or eat between meals either. Don't forget to exercise on a consistent basis to keep your weight down. Make a habit of eating at the same time each day.

Keep your actual schedule in mind as you plan your meals to keep yourself on target. Chew your food thoroughly and take more time eating. That way you can eat smaller portions and still feel satisfied.

When it's time to shop for groceries, don't forget to check the food labels to avoid too much salt or sugar or other ingredients that aren't healthy.

You need to eat foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol. For that reason, buy cookbooks with low-fat and high-fiber recipes in them.

If you follow these simple suggestions, even though you do have diabetes, your health should improve. It's worth the time and trouble to help yourself to better health.
