Solving the Prempro breast cancer mystery all started with theWomen's Health Initiative (WHI), a 15-year study of ways toprevent heart disease, breast and colorectal cancer, andosteoporosis. The WHI consisted of a set of clinical studies andan observational study sponsored by the National Heart, Lung,and Blood Institute (NHLBI) in collaboration with other units ofthe National Institutes of Health (NIH). The study began in 1991and involved more than 161,000 healthy postmenopausal women. One of the clinical studies involved 16,608 women who still hadtheir uterus intact, took estrogen plus progestin therapy or aplacebo. A placebo is a substance that looks like the real drugbut has no biologic effect. The main goal was to see if theestrogen plus progestin therapy would help prevent heart diseaseand hip fractures. Another goal was to determine if possiblebenefits were greater than possible risks for Prempro sideeffects of breast cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer,and blood clots. Results from the estrogen plus progestin study showed that theestrogen plus progestin therapy did not protect against heartdisease and actually increased the risk of Prempro side effectssuch as breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Instead side effects of Prempro have perpetrated an increasedrisk of Prempro breast cancer, coronary heart disease, bloodclots, stroke, intense gallbladder inflammation, lupus, uterineand vaginal cancer; and diminished capacity with dementia andAlzheimer’s disease. In women who take Prempro but haven’t hadhysterectomies -- endometrial cancer has shown to be adevastating Prempro side effect.
