What Is Prempro?

Prempro is a medication commonly prescribed for patients in needof hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The drug falls within acategory of drugs known as progestins containing conjugatedestrogens and medroxyprogesterone acetate.
When the ovaries stop making estrogens, menopause happensusually to women between 45-55 years old. This marks the end ofmonthly menstrual period or what is commonly referred to as the"change of life”. Approximately three million women in the United States takePremarin (Prempro) daily to replace hormones lost at menopause.Every woman experiences menopause in a different way: Some maybreeze through menopause without any noticeable changes whileothers experience hot flashes and intense sweating; vaginalatrophy where the lining of the vagina becomes dry, thinner, andless elastic making sexual intercourse extremely
painful;irregular menstruation either with a very heavy flow,non-existent, and/or erratic; sleep disturbances and nightlysweats; and irritable mood swings. Hormone replacement therapies (HRT) such as Premarin (Prempro)were prescribed as a means for reducing postmenopausal symptomssuch as hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal itch and dryness,a propensity for developing osteoporosis and heart disease. Premarin (Prempro) received FDA (Federal Drug Administration)approval as a HRT in 1995.
