Oculoplastic surgery embraces
a number of procedures to correcthooded or baggy eyelids and improve the aesthetic appearance ofthe eyelids and surrounding area of the face. Blepharoplasty isthe most common procedure. Surgery involves removing andreconturing excess tissue, skin, muscle and sometimes fat fromthe upper and/or lower eyelids. It can be done in conjunctionwith other treatments such as a brow lift and Botox. "Mypriority is to avoid complications, large or small, which mayaffect vision," says Ms Lee. "I believe oculoplastic surgerysets the correct balance between a great aesthetic outcome andensuring that nothing comes between you and your sight."
Unlike the traditional cosmetic or aesthetic surgeon, theocuplastic surgeon is trained to manage complications, whichinvolve the eye itself. It's best to check whether yourconsultant has undergone accredited oculoplastic training andregularly performs a substantial volume of ophthalmic plasticsurgery. For your own peace of mind, check whether they are amember of the British Ophthalmic Society.
