Viagra And Oxytocin: The Love Connection
Viagra and The "Love" Connection:
Feel the Love While Making Love -- One More Possible Benefit of Viagra

There's nothing romantic about having to take before making love. Or is there?

A scientific study shows that the ED drug may actually enhance feelings of love while it's helping impotent men to make love.

A US study reported by CNN says may boost a certain hormone linked with a sense of affection and bonding.

The August 2007 study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison found that rats given had elevated levels of a hormone called oxytocin. This is the same body chemical involved in sexual pleasure, giving birth, and pair bonding.

So making love physically with the help of may, the researchers speculate, influence feelings of emotional love as well.

One of the researchers said "it raises the possibility that erectile dysfunction drugs could be doing more than just affecting erectile dysfunction." Although the study focused on Viagra, it's possible that Cialis and Levitra (two other ED pills) could have the same effect.

He speculated that some day may play a role in social bonding. But not until the "love" connection between and oxytocin undergoes a lot more study.

Oxytocin: The Love Chemical?

The hormone of love. The cuddle hormone. Oxytocin has several nicknames and if is proven to boost oxytocin levels in humans, it will likely get a few more.

So what exactly is oxytocin and why does it make us feel warm and cuddly?

Oxytocin is a hormone that is naturally produced by the pituitary

gland in the brain. It stimulates certain functions in women like contractions during labor and releasing milk for breast feeding. It is also believed to trigger caring behavior and bonding.

For example, female rats that had never given birth were injected with oxytocin. They began "mothering" the pups of other females, nurturing and protecting them as if they were their own. But when the natural release of oxytocin was blocked, animal mothers rejected their own offspring.

Diane Witt is an assistant professor of psychology at Binghamton University. She has conducted oxytocin studies and thinks oxytocin has a lot to do with how men and women bond with each other, especially after making love.

"You first meet him and he’s passable," Witt said. "The second time you go out with him, he’s OK. The third time you go out with him, you have sex. And from that point on you can’t imagine what life would be like without him. What's behind it? It could be oxytocin." (from Oxytocin.org)

So does do for men what the natural release of oxytocin does for women? Only time and more research will tell. But it's starting to look like making love with a little help from could have positive implications for more than just your sex life. It could help your relationship, too.
