Understand Autism Spectrum Disorders
By Melissa Fox
The spectrum exhibits a very wide range of symptoms, right from the mildest to the most intense and extreme of symptoms. Many recent studies have revealed that some metro areas in the United States of America have an incidence of autism, which is as high as 3-4 in every 1000 children. Though there is a lot of exposure given to this disorder through the media and other channels, parents still sometimes fail to see the symptoms early enough, delaying therapy and slowly down the course of improvement in the child.

In autism, it is very essential for a parent and the child’s educational institution to be aware of the early signs and symptoms. When they have observed the child for a certain period of time and suspect an obvious difference or abnormality, they should immediately take action and help the child through his challenges.

It is very difficult even for specialists to immediately diagnose autism. These symptoms mostly appear when the child is about 3 years old. Most parents and teachers keep watching the child silently in the hope that the symptoms he displays are not those of ASD or Spectrum Disorders. They fail to realize that catching this disorder early and treating it early solves most of the problems for the child in his later life.

Children with ASD usually show a general aloofness, withdraw from social contact of any kind, prefer being alone, show repetitive behavior, sometimes throw temper tantrums and show lack of proper speech and motor skills. It is only when the child turns about 3-4 years old that all the symptoms show up completely.

In some cases, the child that the parent thought was normal, suddenly starts disintegrating and shows signs of slowing down immensely, in every area of life. This sudden change becomes only too apparent because the autistic child becomes obviously very differently behaved as compared to normal children of his age group.

Some disorders associated with ASD

Fragile X Syndrome

This type of disorder is the mostly a result of the mental retardation that sometimes affects autistic children. The name of this disorder comes because a part of the child’s X chromosome has

a defective piece that appears unnaturally pinched and fragile while viewed under a microscope.

Fragile X syndrome can be inherited. So if the parents already have a child with ASD and with this disorder, they should understand the consequences and take medical advice before going ahead and planning another child. The probability of them begetting another child with the Fragile X syndrome, in such cases, is very high. It is about a 50-50 chance that they will be taking on the next child.

Tuberous Sclerosis

This is a very rare genetic condition that gives rise to the development of tumors in the brain region, as also in the other vital organs of the body. This type of a disorder has a very strong connection to ASD. The probability that people with ASD are also diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis is very high – about 1-4%.

Conclusion

Autism Spectrum Disorders can be treated effectively if spotted early enough. Though the disorder is complex, there are many adults who suffer from ASD, who able to lead full, independent lives.
